“We know kids in our school don’t have enough food.”
We recently worked with a group of 6th graders from a school in South Minneapolis. The students were conducting their capstone project on hunger, and when their teacher reached out to ask if her students could come learn more about The Sheridan Story’s work, our team jumped at the chance to invite the students to our warehouse.
When our program manager shared with them that over 200,000 kids in Minnesota live in food insecurity, not knowing where their next meal will come from, some of the students quietly confided what they were aware of in their school.
“We know there are kids in our school who don’t have enough food over the weekend,” the students told their teacher.
“How do you know?” she asked.
“We just know,” they replied.
Encouraged by their teacher to prove their assumptions, the students conducted a school-wide survey of their peers. The heartbreaking results revealed that 30% of the students reported they typically do not have enough food to eat over the weekend.
The Sheridan Story exists to eliminate this weekend food gap. Our network of partners has grown drastically over the years, and we ended the 2015-16 school year serving 96 schools and nearly 4,000 students a week. In this year alone, The Sheridan Story has distributed 419,026 meals to kids in our community, contributing to our all-time total of 737,747 meals!
You have been a supporter of The Sheridan Story, and we are grateful for your partnership. As we look ahead to the 2016-2017 school year, we have ambitious goals to expand our programing into 130 schools, and provide over 600,000 meals to over 5,000 students.
P.S. The school year is right around the corner – your gift will be put to use right away so we will be ready to serve the students! Please consider giving today by clicking here.
